I have heard many stories of Larry and my grandpa James Crume who I believe were dear friends. I believe my grandpas love for music must have been influenced by Larry's talent. I knew Larry in the 80's when we worked together at a post-production house in N. Hollywood called Premore. He had built the recording room there for the owner (the founder of the Solo Cup Company) and it started out mainly as an excuse for this owner to create a kids show. Anyway, I got to know Larry fairly well, the time spent waiting for some producer or lackey to show up and oversee the session can open up many conversations. We spent a good bit of time together. I was a little older than the average employee there and since I had grown up in Hollywood around the entertainment biz, I was more aware of his background than most. I met Larry some 35 years ago when he came to United Sound in Detroit, MI. with Brazil 66 as I remember. (I was a former Motown Engineer and we traded stories about his Gold Star sessions and the Motown sessions while we worked at United.) When I worked in LA it was usually at A&M because of he great relationship we developed. I worked on part of the "East Coast" session elements on the "Wings" project thanks to Larry. Today I opened MIX magazine to discover that Larry has been "called home." What a shock and a loss to us all in the industry. Larry was a humble giant in the recording business. Larry and I attended an NCO school at Camp McGill in Japan, the course was intended to make instructors out of junior NCOs. I was very shy and never would have made graduation without Larry's help and guidance, he was a very gifted public speaker. We were not in the same troop but would meet from time to time in the Bn. area he was always a pleasure to talk to. In Korea Larry was the Bn. Communication NCO and I was a Plt Sgt. on the line and again we would get together from time to time. He did a great job and was a fine Soldier. I was able to get his e-mail address and we exchanged e-mail from time to time. I will inform the 7th Cavalry Association. Larry was well respected and his name was mentioned quite often at Reunions. Any kid in his bedroom can put sounds on a PC these days .... but very, very few know how to do it in a way that captivates the ear. I do not have to go into detail regarding what a friend and human being Larry was. He will be dearly missed by all of his golf and bowling friends along with everyone else. Coming up at the end of this month, there is a golf tournament. As you may know, everyone uses white golf balls. Larry has always been different, and uses a yellow ball. In the 60's and 70's Gold Star was my creative home base and Larry was part of it's creative family. He had wonderful ears and through judicious mixing often added something to one of my arrangements that far exceeded what I had written. His mellow personality was a joy to be around. He could calm the waters of many a stormy session. Even though we didn't see much of each other in recent years it was nice to know that if I was really down I could always head for Fromins deli on Tuesday morning and get my Larry fix. We were on tour with the TJB. On our way to Europe, there was a 12 hour delay, in Maine I believe. At the end of it, the TJB was allowed to pre-board, but Larry refused to go ahead of women and children who had also spent the entire night waiting. Larry, you were always there, to contribute your amazing talent for anything our family needed.
